Discussion Room Policy

The Schaumburg Township District Library is a place of quiet reading, study, research and reflection. Discussion Room space is provided to further the informational, cultural and recreational goals for which the Library exists.  It is the policy of Library Board of Trustees to provide Discussion Room space free of charge for uses which clearly and unequivocally conform to all policies approved by the Library Board of Trustees.

Availability and Use

Discussion Rooms are available on an equitable basis regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of users. 

The Library reserves the right to terminate any use of Discussion Rooms that disrupts Library users or staff or interferes with normal Library operations. 

Failure to comply with Library policies, rules and regulations will be grounds for suspension of Discussion Room privileges.

Groups composed of individuals in the eighth grade or lower must have an adult in attendance at all times. 

Attendance in Discussion Rooms may not exceed room capacity as posted by the local fire department.


The Library is not responsible for the content of meetings, programs or events held on the premises. The use of Discussion Rooms does not constitute Library endorsement of the philosophies, practices or viewpoints of participants or attendees. The following disclaimer must be included in all written, electronic and broadcast publicity materials about the use of Discussion Rooms:

The Schaumburg Township District Library provides Discussion Room space as a community service. The Library neither sponsors nor endorses this event nor the presenting individual(s) or organization(s).


Those using Discussion Rooms are subject to all Library policies, rules and regulations. Applicants agree to: abide by this Discussion Room Policy; conform to the use specified in its submitted request; and, assure participant and attendee compliance with Library policies, rules, and regulations. 

Unlawful activity is grounds for suspension of Discussion Room privileges. 

Applicants are responsible for Library property, materials, equipment and furnishings during the period of use of Discussion Rooms. The Library, its employees and Trustees do not assume responsibility for personal injury or damage or loss of personal property during the use of Discussion Rooms.  Personal injury, damage or loss of personal property must be reported promptly to Library staff.

The Library retains the right to monitor all activities conducted on the premises to ensure compliance with Library regulations. Library staff must have free access to Discussion Rooms at all times. 

Participants and attendees may not consume food or have uncovered beverages in Discussion Rooms. 

Applicants must provide notice of cancellations and may not assign a reservation to other individuals or groups. The Library reserves the right to change or cancel Discussion Room reservations.

Make reservations for these rooms by calling the Adult Information/Magazine Desk at the Central Library (847)923-3347.

Room Availability

Central Library: 6 rooms suitable for 1-12 people


Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Sunday: Noon to 4:45 p.m. (summer)

Sunday: Noon to 8:45 p.m. (school year)


Reservations for Discussion Rooms may be made two weeks in advance. A room may be reserved in advance for one 2-hour session per week. A reservation will be cancelled if a group does not show up within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. When not reserved, the rooms are available for a maximum of 2 hours per group, per day, on a first-come, first-served basis. Before using the room, the group must register at the appropriate desk. When a group is finished with the room, a member should return to the desk to check out.


Please respect the Library’s facilities. Waste should not be thrown on the floor. Signs and other decorations are not to be taped to walls or doors. It is not permissible for any group to rearrange library furniture or borrow furnishings from other parts of the Library without the Library’s permission. Modification of electrical units as well as any substantial change to Library facilities is not permitted. Applicants are responsible for library property, materials, furnishings and equipment during the time of their reservations. Food and uncovered beverages are not allowed in the Discussion Rooms.

Cancellation of a Meeting

To cancel a meeting, contact the appropriate desk at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled time. Failure to do so could result in the forfeiture of Discussion Room privileges.

Age of Discussion Room Users

Groups composed of members in the 8th grade or lower must have an adult sponsor in attendance at their meeting(s).


The Library provides discussion room space as a community service. The library neither sponsors nor endorses the philosophies or practices of groups meeting in the rooms.
