Library Programming Policy
This policy guides the development, selection, and administration of Library-sponsored programming at Schaumburg Township District Library. Library programs are a vital expression of the Library’s mission to spark curiosity and enrich our community by connecting people, resources, and services. Through diverse and engaging offerings, programs inspire lifelong learning, support personal growth, and foster meaningful community engagement.
Program Selection and Development
- Programs are developed to address the educational, cultural, informational, and recreational needs and interests of the community.
Professional Library staff curate programming based on patron feedback, trends, service goals, and the Library’s strategic plan.
Presenters are selected based on their subject expertise, communication skills, and public presentation experience. Individuals or organizations are not excluded from consideration based on origin, background, or views. Selection of a program or presenter does not constitute Library endorsement of any individual, organization, or viewpoint.
Programs may be held at Library facilities, off-site locations, or online. Scheduling and location depend on factors such as demand, space, staffing, equipment, parking, and budget.
The Library welcomes program suggestions from the public using the Propose a Program form on the Library’s website; however, decisions regarding program topics, scheduling, and partnerships are made solely by Library staff. Due to the volume of proposals received, Library staff cannot respond to all submissions.
Program Guidelines
Library programs must be educational, informational, or recreational in nature. Programs must not include solicitation, advertising, or sales pitches. Presenters may acknowledge their affiliation with an organization but may not collect personal contact information or promote follow-up sales.
Registration may be required due to space or material limitations. Priority registration may be given to Schaumburg Township District Library cardholders when necessary.
Some programs are designed for specific age groups to ensure the best possible experience for all participants. Age guidelines will be shared in advance and must be followed when registering. Please register only children who fall within the listed age range for each program.
Program participants are expected to follow the Library’s Code of Conduct Policy, and those engaging in disruptive behavior may be asked to leave the program.
The Library may cancel programs at any time due to factors such as weather, presenter absence, or low registration. Cancellations will be communicated to the public, and programs are not automatically rescheduled. The Library reserves the right to cancel a program at any time for the reasons set forth above, due to space limitations or priority of programming, or similar reasons, at the discretion of the Executive Director or their designee.
The Library is committed to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which is outlined in the Library’s ADA Policy. Patrons who require accommodations to participate in a Library program should contact the Library as soon as possible, but no later than five (5) business days before the scheduled event. The Library will attempt to accommodate a late request, but late requests may be denied due to an associated administrative burden.
