Our staff celebrated Earth Day by submitting their favorite books and movies about Planet Earth!

This Book Will Save the Planet (2022)

A climate-change must-read, This Book Will Save the Planet provides a unique format to present the information through colorful illustrations and varied text size. The information is directly targeted at how youth can help understand climate change, climate policies, and the impact humans are having on our planet. This book also provides reflection opportunities for readers to assess and evaluate what they are doing now and how to make changes in the future. At the end of the book, additional resources are shared for further exploration.

Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, is roped into a global strategy to save Earth from another Ice Age when the sun starts to die. Even though this book is fictional, it does address many different branches of cutting-edge science, especially microbiology and environmental science, while staying true to Weir's snarky sense of humor that many loved in The Martian.

Princess Mononoke (2013)

Princess Mononoke is a beautifully animated film that depicts the natural world as fleshed out characters with equal influence over the film's events, along with an equal stake in the film's conflict. Miyazaki's reverence for nature really comes through in the worldbuilding, which results in an animated environment that conveys the life, strength, and beauty in the natural world.
