The resources provided by the Library are selected in accordance with the Library’s Resource Selection Policy to meet the educational, informational, and recreational needs of the community. It is the responsibility of the Library to ensure that different points of view are represented in the resources provided in our collections. Inclusion of a particular resource does not constitute endorsement or advocacy of the ideas or statements found therein.
The Library adheres to the principles of intellectual freedom outlined in the Library Bill of Rights of the American Library Association and the Freedom to Read Statement. Pursuant to these, the Library will not automatically withdraw selected resources from the collection in response to an individual or group.
The choice of library resources by a Schaumburg Township District Library user is an individual matter. While a person may reject resources for oneself, he or she may not restrict access to those resources by other library users.
The following procedures have been adopted for the handling of a formal request for reconsideration of a resource in the Library’s collection:
- The Schaumburg Township District Library user completes and submits the Request for Reconsideration Form.
- Upon receipt of the formal request, the Executive Director will contact the appropriate Department Director to assess and evaluate the resource and concerns of the library user. The Resource Selection Policy will be used to determine the recommendation of retention or removal of the resource.
- The Executive Director will respond in writing to the Schaumburg Township District Library user within 10 business days of the submittal of the Request for Reconsideration form and will cite the Department Director’s recommendation and reasons for it.
An appeal of this recommendation may be made to the Library Board of Trustees. Such appeal must not exceed two pages and must include copies of both the original Request for Reconsideration form and the Executive Director’s written response. The Library Board will review the Library’s decision and supporting documentation. Then, based on whether or not the particular resource conforms to the General Criteria outlined in the Resource Selection Policy, the Board of Trustees will make the final determination. The Schaumburg Township District Library user will then be notified, in writing, of the Board’s decision.
The decision on reconsideration of a specific resource will remain in effect for three years.
Approved by the Schaumburg Township District Library Board of Trustees on July 18, 2022.
